I’ve recently come to realise, getting holiday ready is not as straightforward as you may think, and it’s actually quite the ritual. And I’m not even talking about selecting your destination, purchasing tickets and arranging your holiday logistics. Instead, I have only recently considered, just how much intricate work goes into getting the body holiday ready.
My little ritual starts with an award-winning Vaishaly Signature Facial. I pop into Vaishaly’s discreet clinic in Marylebone (London) every three months, and obviously before I jet off somewhere. for one of their gorgeous facials. When you live in a city like London (filled with pollution), and are always travelling, this help to strip away the dirt and grim to let your skin shine.
The facial incorporates deep-cleansing, skilful and effective extraction, gentle micro-dermabrasion to lift off dead skin cells, followed by high frequency (used to dry and closes pores after extraction and kill bacteria in the skin). The results are clearer, smoother, softer and a naturally radiant complexion.
About six months ago, I discovered Olaplex. At the time my hair was very brittle and dry from highlighting and I was desperate for it to be silky and shiny again. Through a bit of web research, I came across Olaplex, and now I absolutely swear by it. Once a month I head to an unassuming salon on Goodge Street (London), to a no-frills salon to get the nourishing treatment favoured by celebs like Kim K. Olaplex’s simple three-step process that includes a patented active ingredient that works on a molecular level to seek out broken bonds in the hair that are caused by chemical, thermal, and mechanical damage. They promise “you can use Olaplex to restore compromised hair, or add it to another service to provide the ultimate breakage insurance”. Get on Treatwell to find a salon local to you that offers the service for a reasonable price. There’s no need to pay over the odds for a fancy conditioning treatment!
Now, every lady will appreciate that it is imperative to be hair free for a holiday in the sunshine. It goes without saying, duh. Some gals like to wax, I’ve personally been there and survived that excruciating pain and those ingrown hairs, and have since moved on to IPL. For those of you who haven’t come across this gem yet, or are unfamiliar with it, IPL is Intense Pulse Light. By beaming highly concentrated light into the hair follicle, the pigment in the follicles absorbs the light and hair is destroyed. The cosmetic treatment is relatively pain-free. The less hair, the less it hurts. And when I say “hurt”, I am referring to a warm sensation like a sharp scratch or the flick of a rubber band. It’s not really that bad at all, to be honest. The results are fantastic; finer and lighter hair growth until it all eventually stops entirely. Following your initial course of treatments to stop the hair growth, an occasional maintenance treatment may then be required every few months to years, depending on your hormone levels and hair growth capabilities.
As the date draws closer to me jetting off, it’s time to buckle down and put the icing on the cake if you will ;-P I have only recently started experimenting with eyelash extensions and am not a connoisseur by any stretch of the imagination. Through the recommendation of my friends who get them regularly, I’ve recently given synthetic mink eyelashes a go. The faux-mink extensions are made of manmade fibres that are designed to imitate real mink fur. They are very fine, soft and silky, just like real fur (but obviously animal cruelty-free), and they feel exactly like your own lashes. One of the advantages of using synthetic over real fur is they won’t lose their curl when wet. They are very long lasting and are great if your own lashes are fine and weak. Because they are so light, they don’t tend to drop or twist, even after many weeks of wear. It takes about an hour to apply these bad boys, and the results are totally worth it. I was dubious about paying up to get them done, so had a good hard look around and discovered Amami Beauty (London) online via Gumtree, who did a great job. If somewhere hasn’t been recommended to you, and you have some time to experiment, I’d suggest checking out beauty therapists who advertise their services on Gumtree or Treatwell as a more cost-effective way of getting them done.
Next, I was off to my local nail salon, Ruby Nail & Beauty (London) to get a Shellac mani and pedi. The girls down there were very friendly. The salon was small and functional. Whilst they did a thorough job, I have to say, its taken the best part of a week for the pain in my fingers to subside. They cut them down so much that it hurt and in their haste to get out the door by 7 pm, my quick was ruthlessly cut unnecessarily. Whilst I’ve had friends recommend them, I’ve made the decision not to return. Still, Shellac holiday nails are a must in classic muted nudes or bright, flamboyant shades that scream “where’s the Pina Colada at?!”
The final step of my pre-holiday beauty ritual is the oh so fake, yet real tan. There are a lot of car-crash tans on the high street, promising to make you a bronzed goddess, delivering the results of TOWIE lookalike. I’m an Aussie lass, so I value protecting my skin from the harmful sun, and appreciate a natural looking tan alternative. Lala at Amami Beauty, hooked me up with a Vita Liberata spray tan, from the comfort of my own home. Vita Liberata created the world’s first “odourless tan” in 2007. Whilst I would say it is very pleasant smelling to apply, I don’t think the odour has been completely eliminated, and there is a mild scent as the tan develops overnight. In 2011, Vita Liberata became the first completely non-toxic tanning brand, developing a collection of tan solutions free from parabens, perfume, alcohol and all chemicals of concern. The best thing about this product is the natural-looking results that it gives. By using natural, certified organic and Ecocert approved extracts, the skin is left conditioned giving you long-lasting natural looking colour; you can expect this tan to last 2-3 weeks AND to fade naturally. This product has a huge celeb following understandably, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Sofia Vergara, Rita Ora and Ellie Goulding. Oh, and of course Jet Set with Jas!?
So, that’s my pre-holiday ritual. What’s yours? I’d love to hear if you have any hints and tips to getting holiday ready.
Until next time, safe travels.
