With the summer holiday season finally upon us, no doubt you’re starting to think about where to jet off to, to dig your toes in the sand and feel the cool sea breeze against your warm sun-drenched skin. Caring for your hair whilst frolicking on the beach might be the last thing on your mind, but it turns out it is pretty important stuff if you want to look after your locks. So, this week I caught up with Stephanie, Salon Manager at the award-winning hair salon, Headmasters, in London’s stylish West End to find out exactly how you can care for your hair whilst vacationing this summer.
Steph is a talented stylist who is seriously in the know, having owned her own boutique salon before being headhunted to join Headmasters as the flagship Salon Manager. She’s known for her work in the industry as a Team Consultant and L’Oreal Colour Expert and has travelled across Europe expertly leading wedding hair teams and assisting on London Fashion Week.
What can people do in the first instance to protect their hair to make sure it is in the best condition before going on vacation?
“I would recommend visiting your stylist around 4 weeks prior to your departure. Have an in-salon treatment and a trim. Ideally, I would also be recommending my clients to do a weekly home treatment to strengthen their hair as much as possible to prep for the sun and sea water.”
What are your favourite haircare travel products?
“My go-to products are anything Pureology. They have an amazing natural range, that is sulphate free, which colour protects to help prevent colour fade as much as possible. My secret go-to product which my clients can’t live without is Pureology Colour Fanatic Multi-Benefit Leave-In Treatment. It has 21 benefits in one bottle: UVA protection, heat protection, detangles the hair and anti-colour fade to name a few. This should be in everyone’s suitcase!”
I use the Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and Condition. You can get yours here.
What can people do when they’re actually on holiday to protect and care for their hair?
“The best thing you can do on holiday is use a good sun protection for the hair. Experiment and have fun with head scarfs and sun hats. Limiting the amount of time, your hair is left exposed to the sun.”
What are the biggest mistakes you see people making when it comes to their hair when they are travelling, and how can they be avoided?
“The biggest mistake I hear in the salon and see whilst on holiday is most people forget to protect their hair and never think about covering up. It’s always best to prevent the damage from happening in the first place.”
What are the tricks of the trade for repairing and reviving your hair post-holiday?
“Always visit your stylist once you have returned from your trip. Book yourself in for a toner to rid any brassy tones and or to refresh your faded colour. A L’Oreal Fusio Dose instant protein treatment followed by a micro trim will prevent any further damages which may have started whilst been away.”
Headmasters, Great Portland Street is celebrating its 5th birthday, offering customers 30% off all hair services, as well as a small goodie bag for appointments booked between 21 July – 4 August 2019.
Until next time, safe travels.
